GIFTSym12 Date Announcement!

We are happy to announce that the dates for GIFTSym12 have now been set! GIFTSym12 will take place in-person on Monday, May 6th, 2024 (half day starting around mid-day), and Tuesday, May 7th, 2024 (full day). GIFTSym12 will be held in Orlando, FL in the UCF Research Park area.

We ask that all presenters plan to attend and present in-person, as presentations are planned to be given in-person only (special circumstances can be considered if a presentation needs to be conducted virtually).

We are planning to have a hybrid option for non-presenting attendees who wish to participate virtually. Non-presenters are of course, also welcome to attend in-person.

GIFTSym12 participation and attendance does not have an associated fee, but we do ask that you RSVP online prior to the event so that we know the number of people attending. More details will be shared as GIFTSym12 approaches.

A reminder of the important dates is below:

Abstract Submission Deadline – March 25th, 2024 (800 word abstract)
Anticipated Acceptance Notification Date – April 5th, 2024

GIFTSYM12 CALL FOR PAPERS ANNOUNCEMENT!

GIFTSym12 is planned to be held in-person the week of May 6th, 2024, and will be two days long. The dates are currently in the confirmation process, but are anticipated to be either Tuesday, May 7th and Wednesday, May 8th, 2024 OR Wednesday, May 8th and Thursday, May 9th, 2024 in Orlando, FL. Another announcement will be posted once dates are confirmed.

All presentations are planned to be presented in-person (special circumstances can be considered if a presentation needs to be conducted virtually). GIFTSym12 is the twelfth annual Generalized Intelligent Framework for Tutoring (GIFT) User Symposium! GIFTSym12 invites GIFT designers, developers and practitioners to submit technical papers about their ideas, experiences, and lessons-learned in using GIFT to author and evaluate Adaptive Instructional Systems (AISs). GIFT is an open-source, empirically-based, service-oriented framework of tools, methods and standards to make it easier to author computer-based tutoring systems (CBTSs), deliver and manage instruction, and assess the effect of adaptive instruction, CBTSs, components and methodologies. GIFT is being developed under the Adaptive Tutoring Research Science & Technology project at the Learning in Intelligent Tutoring Environments (LITE) Laboratory, part of the US Army Combat Capability Development Command – Soldier Center’s Simulation and Training Technology Center (DEVCOM-SC STTC).

Submission Guidelines

All papers must be original and not simultaneously submitted elsewhere (such as to a journal or a conference), or previously published. All figures, tables, and images must be original and not previously published.

The following paper categories are welcome:

Full papers (5-10 pages using template) describing design, application, and/or science-based potential enhancements to GIFT.
Short papers (3-4 pages using template) describing standards opportunities for AISs. This will form the basis for a potential separate session on the applicability of standards for AIS development.
Demonstration (3-4 pages using template) showcasing mature use cases that highlight advancements in GIFT’s utility across performance assessments, pedagogical reasoning and coaching, data visualization, adaptive and intelligent training, and after action reviews.

Important Dates

Abstracts are required to be extended abstracts (minimum 800 words) covering the focus of your paper, results/conclusions and recommendations. Review for acceptance will be based on the extended abstracts. There will be a rolling review process and acceptance notification. Presentations will need to be received prior to the event to help facilitate the hybrid portion.

Publication

GIFTSym12 proceedings will be published by U.S. Army Combat Capability Development Command - Solider Center (DEVCOM-SC).

There will be a contributor agreement for all paper authors to sign prior to proceedings publication.

In order to perform server maintenance, cloud.gifttutoring.org will be down for an extended time on the week of December 11th, 2023.

It is anticipated that cloud.gifttutoring.org will be down for a duration of seven full days: Monday December 11th, 2023, Tuesday December 12th, 2023, Wednesday December 13th, 2023, Thursday December 14th, 2023, Friday December 15th, 2023, Saturday December 16th, 2023, and Sunday December 17th, 2023. It is anticipated that it will be back online on Monday December 18th, 2023 by noon eastern time.

Hello to the GIFT User Community! It's been a busy year and we are excited to post our latest public-facing version of the Generalized Intelligent Framework for Tutoring (GIFT). And just in time for Thanksgiving!!

A GIFT account is required to download the software, and is available at no cost. Also check out the forums for Frequently Asked Questions from the community and to contact the GIFT development team if any issues are experienced, or if new features are requested. The Design Recommendations for Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITSs) series explores the impact of ITS design on education and training. Specifically, this book volume includes discussion of applications for Professional Career Education. The types of training that occurs in professional education tend to be more applied, and experiential than in traditional ITSs. This book highlights general approaches and techniques that can be beneficial to developing ITSs for professional career education. Additionally, the book includes chapters with specific use cases where ITSs have been implemented in diverse domains including medical, teaching, commercial pilot, and manufacturing training.
