Overview

The GIFT Export Tool is used to create an easily redistributable/executable GIFT environment complete with domain content (courses). The distribution package output by the tool is a single zip file.

Instructions

Currently there are two versions of the GIFT Export tool, the Desktop application and the version available through the GIFT Dashboard. The main difference is that the Desktop application allows you to export a GIFT instance that can be executed on another computer.

Desktop (deprecated)

To run the export tool run “launchExportTool.bat” in the “GIFT/scripts/tools” folder.

The utility uses an intuitive and user-friendly “Wizard” style interface with the following screens:

  • Welcome (includes hyperlink to this documentation)
  • Select Domain Content: Allows the user to select the domain content to be included with the exported GIFT instance
  • Options: Allows the user to select export options to use when executing the export logic.
  • Choose Output File: Allows user to specify the path and filename where the output zipfile will be written.
  • Summary: Allows user to review the settings thus far, and view the required and available disks space, etc. From this screen the user click the “Finish” button to complete the process.

The export process can be terminated at any point by clicking the Cancel button.

After performing the export, the output file can be shared with other users. To install GIFT on using the output from the export tool, simply unzip the file on the target host.

Limitations

· Desktop Export tool is tested on Windows 7 only.
· Output from the export tool is tested on Windows 7 only.

GIFT Dashboard

To run the export tool in the GIFT Dashboard, click the export icon (see Figure 1) on the “My Courses” page of the GIFT Dashboard webpage.

Figure 1. Screenshot of the "My Courses" page of the GIFT Dashboard showing the export tool button circled in red.

Upon starting the export tool all of the course tiles shown will have checkboxes placed on them. These checkboxes allow you to select the courses you wish to export in a downloadable zip file. After selecting your courses to export, click the Begin Export button. Follow the dialog’s instructions to complete the export. Once completed the browser should prompt you to download the export zip file from GIFT.

The export process can be terminated at any point by clicking the Cancel button.

After performing the export, the output file can be shared with other users. To import this export into another GIFT instance, simple use the Import tool in the GIFT Dashboard (see GIFTImportTool.htm for more information).
